The device comes with 3D depth sensors, RGB cameras, Motorized Tild function and a multi-array mic which stretches from one end to the other of the device itself. Based on software technology developed internally by Rare, which is a Microsoft Game Studios subsidiary and on a technology by PrimeSense a Israeli developer.

Kinect initially received an announcement on June 1, 2009 at E3 2009 under the code name “Project Natal”. The named was given following a tradition that Microsoft has by using cities as code names for its projects. “Project Natal” was named after a Brazilian City called Natal, considered to a tribute to the country of Brazil where Microsoft director Alex Kipman is originally from and also incubated the project.
